My oldest son is about to turn 11, and he’s at an age where he’s becoming more and more conscious of all the social pressures that kids face. What kind of shoes to get and clothes to wear, how to look and what music to listen to. A few weeks ago at dinner we were talking about what it means to be cool, and how it really isn’t any of those things.
Last week I hosted a few friends over to read the book The Cool Bean. What I really liked about the book was how it underscored how to be kind to others, what empathy is and why it’s important and most of all what it really means to be cool. This book was really perfectly timed for us as a family as he is moving from the 5th grade to middle school next year and will find a new group of friends.
This is the third book in this series by Jory John and Pete Oswald, and each one teaches an important lesson to live by. These are titled The Bad Seed (which reminds us that positive change is possible for all of us) and The Good Egg (about balance, self-care and accepting of those we love).
